A leopard is probably not the first animal that springs to mind when you think of the Overberg region at the southernmost tip of Africa. The southern right whales of Walker Bay, blue cranes of the Overberg wheat belt or bontebok of De Hoop may conjure up much more vivid pictures. The Overberg may be known for its splendid coastal vistas and rolling wheat and canola fields, but the rugged mountain ranges is home to an equally fascinating array of wildlife, including leopards.

Leopards in the Cape region are incredibly shy and elusive; very few people ever get to see one – and when they do it is usually only a fleeting glimpse. Studying such a secretive animal in a vast and untamed mountainous landscape is incredibly challenging.
