Environmental Educator Vacancy: Cederberg

The Cape Leopard Trust is seeking a highly motivated, creative and enthusiastic candidate to run its environmental education programme in the Cederberg and surrounds (Wupperthal, Clanwilliam, Citrusdal, Op-die-Berg, Piketberg). The position requires a diligent, self-motivated and practical person with the relevant field experience to inspire and educate a variety of audiences including children and adults. The position will be based in the Cederberg so the candidate should be willing to relocate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage youth, teachers and public to raise awareness for leopard conservation and other environmental matters;
  • Plan and conduct presentations, school day trips, school holiday programmes and eco-clubs;
  • Plan and conduct overnight camps with school groups (camp duration: 2-3 nights);
  • Market CLT education programme at schools and recruit new schools into the programme;
  • Develop curriculum-based resources (lesson material and activities);
  • Establish and foster relationships with environmental education project partners and sponsors and other stakeholders;
  • Seek new funding opportunities;
  • Compile project stats for donor feedback reports;
  • Compile project news articles for social media and website;
  • Monthly report writing;
  • Assist with project vehicle maintenance;
  • General administration tasks and support Environmental Education Coordinator with project logistics.

Job Requirements

  • Tertiary level qualification relevant to Nature Conservation, Conservation Biology or PGCE (with strong Life Sciences background);
  • Good general knowledge of biodiversity and geology of the Western Cape;
  • Minimum 2 years relevant work experience;
  • Teaching and/or guiding experience beneficial;
  • Valid driving license and an exemplary driving record (willing to acquire Code 10/ C1 driving license and PrDP);
  • Computer literacy (MS Office Suite);
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both Afrikaans and English is essential with knowledge of an African language desirable;
  • Current First-Aid qualification;
  • An excellent level of fitness to be able to lead group activities (i.e. hiking in rugged mountainous terrain).

  • Be prepared to work flexible hours and on weekends.
