Cape Leopard Trail Run 2015

Published: 03 November 2015

On a sunny October Saturday in Paarl the Cape Leopard Trust launched its inaugural Trail Run in partnership with Cascade Country Manor, set in the spectacular surrounding countryside. Over 140 runners took part in the event, and despite the early weekend start the enthusiastic athletes were already lining up just after 5.30am to register.

Three trail courses of 5km, 15km and 20km were available to choose from, and after all the intricate planning over the last few months it was fantastic to see the runners on the starting line anxious to set off. There were some serious competitors amongst the crowds, and the winner of the men’s 20km was Dion Middelkoop, who completed his run in 1hour and 18 minutes, while the ladies 20km winner, Megan Hanekom finished in 1hour and 42 minutes.

Most of The Cape Leopard Trust team managed to take part too, and a special group of lady leopards joined us from our partners BJK Industries. Cape Union Mart sent a team of guys and gals in blue to assist as marshals along the course, and despite a few hiccups with the route markers everyone commented that they had enjoyed the event and loved the setting.

The trail run was the inspiration of our kind hosts, Maika and Volker Goetze at Cascade Country Manor, and activities manager Eckhardt Kühn. We extend a special thank you to them for their generosity and adventurous spirit! Our partners, Cape Union Mart supplied awesome prizes and logistical support, while Buffet Olives kindly donated the prize medals and some olive gifts. A word of appreciation also goes to other sponsors and the people who came together to make the event possible.

We are now looking forward to our second annual trail run in 2016 and we hope to see you there!
