Avis to the Rescue

Published: 08 September 2015

Meet Madala - a male caracal captured and radio-collared - this time in Silvermine area. He is easily the oldest caracal being monitored in the Urban Caracal project based on extreme tooth wear and facial scarring (we are unable to determine exact ages). His name comes from the Nguni languages and respectfully means 'old man.’ Weighing in at 12kg, we  can see this guy has been around the block and is a real survivor!

We are dedicating this wonderful picture to another ‘red’ champion, Mike Sema, from Avis. Mike got a call from us late on Friday afternoon, urgently asking for his assistance due to a technical emergency with our education project Sprinter bus, which had broken down and needed an urgent repair. We did not want to let our junior campers down for the Cederberg wilderness camp departing first thing on Monday morning.

Despite the lateness of the hour, Mike rose to the challenge and managed to locate two minibus vehicles we could use that meant the next camp could indeed go ahead as planned, while our CLT bus received the TLC it needed in the hands of Keanan Williams and the excellent team at Sandown Motors Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles in Cape Town.
