The Cape Leopard Trust would like to congratulate our partner Bushmanskloof and 'Die Nuwe Graskoue Trappers’ on their recent success at the 19th annual International Performing Arts Championships in Long Beach, California.

The 17 strong Trappers team won 29 gold and silver medals in total, and the Riel band took the overall trophy. Born out of Khoi and San traditions, Riel dance is an important part of indigenous culture in which leopards have a special reverence. Die Nuwe Graskoue Trappers are supported by Bushmanskloof Wilderness Reserve in the Cederberg, and actively managed, choreographed and coached by the reserve’s Executive Chef and deputy chef, Floris Smith.

The seventeen members of the dance troupe, all between the ages of 13 and 19, are from the rural community of Wupperthal and its surrounds, at the very heart of leopard country. It is an achievement of note for Wupperthal securing global recognition for their efforts to conserve their heritage.
