Oom Schalk does it for the cats

Published: 12 August 2013

There was a sharp intake of breath amongst the audience as 'Oom Schalk' delivered the sad final line of 'In the Withaak's Shade', one of Herman Charles Bosman’s African tales about a leopard. In a special performance last Tuesday evening in support of The Cape Leopard Trust, stage actor, David Muller, set the scene as Oom Schalk Lourens at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg to perform a collection of stories by Bosman, considered one of South Africa’s best short story writers.

Despite wet and cold weather, the audience of over 100 people enjoyed a night of cultural wonder learning about the fascinating lives of the good people in Groot Maurico, where many of the stories are set, with coffee and 'koeksister' thrown in.

The Cape Leopard Trust would like to thank everyone who attended, the sponsors of raffle prizes: Leopard's Leap Wines, K-Way and 'Oom Schalk' himself, as well as David Muller who raised almost R7000 for The Cape Leopard Trust.
