Great New Results for Gouritz Cameras

Only a month after placing a camera in an as yet unmonitored area the first photograph of a new leopard was captured at Hartebeesvlakte. This illustrates the importance of the involvement of private landowners, both in terms of allowing us to work on their properties and also purchasing additional camera traps. This allows us to work over a broader area and gather more information, not only on the local leopards, but also on the general mammal biodiversity of the area. We would like to thank all those people who have allowed us to work on their land; your ongoing support has greatly enriched this project, and we really appreciate it!

We have also photographed a new leopard at Kleinberg down in Die Hel. We suspect that the new leopard is a female, but it can be difficult to distinguish between female and sub-adult male leopards as they are often a similar size. Kishwan, the resident male, followed in her tracks within the same month. After an absence of six months from this particular site it is extremely exciting to get a photograph of not only Kishwan but also a new leopard. We would really like to place some more cameras in the Swartberg area but need more cameras to monitor this internationally renowned jewel of biodiversity.
