BSc Student: Botany & Zoology, Stellenbosch University: Wian Nieman

Wian grew up in a small town in Namaqualand, after which he moved to picturesque Stellenbosch to pursue his life-long passion for the natural environment and the scientific study thereof. He completed a BSc degree in Biodiversity and Ecology at the University of Stellenbosch in 2016, and is currently completing a postgraduate honours degree in the department of Botany and Zoology. His current research focuses on assessing anthropogenic threats to the persistence of leopards in the Boland region.

The elusive and cryptic nature of the leopard, along with its obvious beauty and graceful poise caused this animal to quickly creep deep into Wian’s heart, and ensuring its survival has become a top priority. He aims to proceed with an MSc in 2018. He also enjoys various forms of exercise, and has a special appreciation for the written word, all of which he pursues in his free time.
