Chris Eksteen

Education & Outreach Manager: Chris Eksteen

Chris has a burning passion for environmental education. He completed his Masters in Environmental Education at Rhodes University where he investigated how outdoor education programmes in South Africa respond to the needs of visually impaired learners via inclusive practices.

Chris began his career in tourism management in the Free State and quickly found his passion for camping while sharing and educating people about conservation. This inspired him to complete an array of management, education and conservation courses. With an excess of ten years experience in the camping industry in South Africa, he went on to author an outdoor education resource book series to share this passion with the camping community.

Chris has joined the Cape Leopard Trust as the Education and Outreach Manager to upscale the environmental education programme, and to use his extensive experience and enthusiasm for environmental education to inspire and develop others. What excites Chris most about his role is that he can learn about nature every day, and together with the CLT EE team can explore new ways to make nature accessible and interesting to all.

Chris comments: “We need to understand nature in order to love and care for her. Equally, we need to ignite a passion within people to connect with nature in order for them to love and care for nature as she does for us.”

As well as managing the EE team, Chris is involved in fundraising for the environmental education component of the organisation.
