Cape Leopard Trust Ambassador: Jeff Ayliffe

I have had a passion for conservation as far back as I can remember, and growing up in Pietermaritzburg as a schoolboy, I remember persuading my parents to drive me to small private nature reserves to volunteer and work with the rangers.

In 1982 some remarkable experiences with animals from the 'Big 5' whilst on course in the Caprivi, and time spent in Angola, cemented my love for the bush and left an imprint that would always be in my mind.

In later years, my full-time position in commercial radio offered me the opportunity to give exposure to conservation-based organisations, and living in Cape Town, much of my focus was marine-based. I built up great relationships with the Two Oceans Aquarium, as well as various companies operating from False Bay and Kleinbaai facilitating White Shark research, as well as rehabilitation and conservation work with seals and penguins.

But a return to the bush was inevitable. In 2020, I met wildlife vet Dr Willem Burger, and started working with him producing video and stills from a variety of projects involving capture and relocation of different species including Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo and Eland. This lead on to the opportunity of film work with Cheetah re-wilding and relocation projects, and now I am working virtually full time in conservation.

I'm honoured to have been offered a role as an ambassador of the Cape Leopard Trust, with the hope that this will allow me to contribute to the protection of another magnificent African predator, the leopard.
